The Bottom Line: What is a Tundra Capstone? The 2022 Tundra Capstone is Toyota’s new $75,000 Flagship full size pickup truck. This loaded Tundra comes standard with a 437 HP V6 twin turbo hybrid V6 engine, 22 inch wheels, and lots and lots of chrome.
The new 2022 Tundra is now available with a hybrid powertrain. The Toyota Tundra Hybrid pickup is ready to take on the Ford F-150 Hybrid, as well as efficient diesel options offered on the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and the Dodge Ram.
So, what is a Toyota i-FORCE MAX? The 2022 Toyota i-FORCE MAX is an all new model, that is powered by an electrified i-FORCE MAX 3.5L liter TwinTurbo V6 hybrid gas engine, that delivers an impressive 437 HP horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain consists of a 10 speed automatic transmission and a hybrid electric motor, with a 288 volt battery pack, and has a 12,000 pound maximum towing capacity. All Capstone edition pickup trucks have a 4×4 driveline as standard equipment.
This week Toyota sent me a 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone CrewMax 4×4 i-FORCE MAX Hybrid pickup truck to test drive and review. The base window sticker price of the Capstone model is $73,530. The options on the test truck are: the load leveling rear air suspension system for $1,045, the special paint for $425, the ball mount for $65, and the non-skid spray-on bed liner for $579. The MSRP manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including the $1,695 destination charge, is: $77,339.
After adding in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealer fees, the out the door and in your driveway total purchase price came to: $87,006. Wait, what? $87 Grand for a pickup truck? And what a truck it is. When you are going to spend over $70,000 for a truck it has to be at the luxury level you would expect for that kind of money. The new 2022 Toyota Capstone Edition pickup delivers that luxury experience, and then some.
As soon as I started driving the truck I knew everything was different. The electronic suspension was smooth as silk, the i-FORCE MAX TwinTurbo V6 hybrid gas engine made the truck pull like a muscle car, and the upscale leather and wood interior looked fantastic. The ride, comfort and performance level was the best I have ever experienced in a truck, and I have been test driving new vehicles for over 50 years now, since 1972.
What came to mind is: If Lexus built and sold a pickup truck, would it ride and drive like this? With plenty of power and torque, a great leather interior, plus a long list of options that would rival any pickup truck for sale on the planet, the Capstone Edition could be a Lexus luxury pickup truck. While $87 Grand is a huge chunk of change, high dollar full size pickup trucks have been for sale from the Big Four – Chevy, GMC, Ford and RAM – for several years. Now it’s Toyota’s time to get into the game.
Overall this new 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone Edition has them all beat. Available only in one body configuration as a CrewMax 4 door cab with a 5.5 foot bed, the cabin also comes fully loaded with all of the new Tundra’s tech features. And with the power automatic running boards, the power bedside corner step is standard equipment as well.
The Capstone Edition has a stunning black and white leather interior accented with walnut trim, a Capstone logo in the dashboard, and a full length side to side power drop down rear window, that opens the entire back of the cab up to the open air. The disappearing rear window is a neat parlor trick that alone is worth the price of admission.
With interest in pickup trucks at an all time high, full sized trucks now have a new entry at the upper echelon of the segment. The 2022 Tundra Capstone Edition provides a premium collection of features and upgrades for those buyers looking to elevate their truck experience. Capstone is the halo truck in the Tundra lineup, as it builds on the impressive features of Toyota’s all new full sized truck. It really is an E ticket ride.
When you’re ready to buy a new pickup truck, the Toyota Tundra should be on your ride and drive list, as it is the newest full size pickup truck in the class.
