Can one player make a difference?

Apparently so.

Perennial powerhouse Pinewood fell out of the Bay Area News Group girls basketball rankings after losing four of its first six games.

The Los Altos Hills school is back in the rankings this week, rising from unranked to No. 10 after beating third-ranked Salesian 67-62 on Saturday.

Ava Uhrich sat out the first month for Pinewood, ineligible after transferring from Burlingame. She made her Pinewood debut against Salesian and finished with 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, eight rebounds and three assists.

Piedmont remained No. 1, followed by Archbishop Mitty, Salesian, Sacred Heart Cathedral and Carondelet. Salesian beat SHC and SHC beat Carondelet.

Wednesday, SHC visits Mitty.

Oakland Tech jumped from No. 7 to No. 6 after rolling past last week’s No. 6 team, San Ramon Valley, by 25 points.

Acalanes and Bishop O’Dowd moved up one spot — Acalanes at No. 7, O’Dowd at No. 8 — after several blowouts.

San Ramon Valley, which has a win over Pinewood, is No. 9.

This week’s schedule will be highlighted by MLK games on Saturday and Monday at Bishop O’Dowd.
