RICHMOND — A 32-year-old Richmond man died in what police said was a drive-by shooting near Contra Costa College on Tuesday.
Richmond police Sgt. Aaron Pomeroy said Antonio Wright had at least one gunshot wound and was down when officers arrived to the 2400 block of Aberdeen Way about 4 p.m. Several callers reported the shooting to police, Pomeroy said.
“It was difficult to tell how many wounds were there,” he said.
Paramedics tried to revive Wright at the scene, but he died there.
The homicide is the 14th one investigated by Richmond police this year. At this time last year, they had investigated 13 homicides.
The shooting happened less than a mile north of Contra Costa College, but Pomeroy said students and staff at the college were never in danger.
“In our opinion, this was absolutely targeted,” Pomeroy said.
According to Pomeroy, Wright was buying something when a vehicle drove by and shots rang out. The other person was not injured in the gunfire, he said.
Police did not identify any suspects, nor did they have any information on the getaway vehicle.
Police urged anyone with information on the shooting to contact them at 51-307-8177.
