A woman standing in a San Rafael cul-de-sac was fatally struck by an SUV, and the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI, the California Highway Patrol said.
The emergency call, at 9:23 p.m. Tuesday, reported that a pedestrian had “jumped in front of a vehicle,” and that the driver was performing CPR on her, the CHP log said. The crash happened on Rubicon Court, a one-block cul-de-sac in the Lucas Valley neighborhood.
The 37-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The CHP’s preliminary investigation determined that a 2016 Land Rover was heading toward the entrance of the cul-de-sac, and “for reasons still under investigation” the woman was standing directly in its path. She was hit by the left side of the vehicle.
The driver, a 39-year-old man, was not injured. He was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence causing great bodily injury and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, said CHP Officer Darrel Horner.
