We’ve seen this movie before. Jimmy Garoppolo can’t do enough at quarterback for the 49ers to pull away, giving Russell Wilson a chance to pull out a win that could have been a loss.
That’s how it went for the 49ers Sunday night in an 11-10 loss to the Denver Broncos. Wilson is now 5-1 against Garoppolo and 18-4 against the 49ers, with all previous games coming as quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks.
Wilson put together an 80-yard, 12-play drive to put Denver up by the final score, with the 49ers batting down a two-point conversion pass. It came on a night where Wilson was struggling as much as Garoppolo and the Broncos were being booed by the home crowd for their offensive futility.
Garoppolo got the 49ers near midfield before forcing a first-and-10 throw in the direction of Deebo Samuel, who was blanked in coverage. Jonas Griffith, a former 49er, caught the deflected interception just before the two-minute warning.
Two of Garoppolo’s mistakes didn’t include a thrown ball – a fumbled snap exchange with center Jake Brendel for the 49ers’ first turnover and then somehow losing track of where he was and stepping on the end line for a third-quarter safety as Denver closed with 7-5 in the third quarter.
While Garoppolo worked fine with Samuel a year ago, there were some issues in Denver. He missed an open Samuel in the first half while throwing incomplete to Brandon Aiyuk. Another time, Samuel broke free while being covered against a linebacker. Garoppolo hit him, but Samuel had to slow up for a 32-yard gain that could have been a 68-yard touchdown.
Garoppolo was 18 of 29 for 211 yards, one touchdown, one interception. Wilson was 20 of 33 for 184 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions.
